I’m actually shocked at the number of you reblogging that photoset of the ‘refugee/immigrant/illegal’ children claiming that they’re “insurgents” or that they should “go back to their own country” as though these children are maliciously attempting to cross our borders to ‘sack Rome’.
You don’t think there are long term political strategies at play? I don’t necessarily buy the “criminal” aspect myself but I can see the flooding of border red states with future blue voters with the promise of amnesty as long term Dem strategy. They are much better at it than the other side.
Of course there are long-term political strategies. This is a manufactured crisis and I’ve already talked a lot about that here. My point is that — politics aside — these are THE LIVES OF CHILDREN on the line (that adults in positions of power are playing with) and that should be enough for anyone, Republican or Democrat, to stand the fuck up and say “this is despicable, enough is enough!”
I don’t necessarily believe that we should grant amnesty to all of these children (and adults) as Americans just because they are here now. I am also fairly certain that we will continue to see those heart-felt articles headlined by ~CHILDREN IN CAGES~ until the public is complacent and sympathetic enough to permit Obama to issue another EO without any significant backlash.
It is absolutely undeniable, though, that this crisis is homegrown (and I’m willing to bet it was deliberate as we’ve talked about before) — not just for the sake of votes or destabilization, but also to facilitate the growth of federal response abilities (FEMA).
If we can send them home safely, we definitely should. But looking forward, our government needs to stop giving them a reason to come here in the first place because as you said our economy just cannot handle that many more mouths to feed - we’re struggling to keep Americans afloat as it is.
